In response to your e-mail of 26 April 2011 regarding Fiat Grande Punto model. Please, firstly allow me to apologise for our response time.
Regarding the steering system provided in our vehicles, we are happy to inform you of the following.
Fiat Group Automobiles was among the first to utilise EPS (Electrical Power Steering) technology which is an innovation in safety and lessened environmental impact with a view to maximising driver comfort and adding greater attention to compliance the rules of environmental protection.
The steering system with electric drive or EPS is a complex system installed on the vehicle and, as such, is subject to a possible decline in performance or wear over time.
To ensure the proper management of any malfunction, the electric power steering mechanism is able to internally self-diagnose, which provides an immediate visual indication to the driver of any malfunction by illuminating the system failure warning light. Possible reasons for malfunction could be, an error to the electric motor, sensors, control unit or its wiring or power.
Should the system not engage or work correctly, the driver may feel a greater weight or strain to the steering of the vehicle, especially in low speed maneuvers.
It must be emphasised that, as also indicated in the owners manual, under no circumstances would this cause a loss of steering or steering functionality of the vehicle, as the ability to steer would continue to be provided from the steering shaft, though requiring greater effort, especially, as mentioned, in low speed maneuvers.
The above information is in no way related to our enhancement campaign N°5397 to the steering shaft (a mechanical component of the system), which aims to prevent the loss of the steering function of the vehicle (this could possibility occur due to unnecessary or idle turning of the steering wheel causing a hardening of the steering function).
Regarding the vehicles in question, we would like to clarify that the terms of the warranty have been exceeded. We have however, looked into this issue from the customers point of view, and therefore ask, that you contact our local importers for further information as to how we will assist you financially as a gesture of goodwill.
